Nicole Kidman has praised husband Keith Urban for his dedication to escorting her on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

Urban made a 35-hour journey from Australia to Cannes, France where Kidman was attending the world premiere of her movie The Paperboy and her HBO film Hemingway & Gellhorn.

The actress told The AP that she was touched by Urban's gesture, saying: "As long as he's there, he's my rock, everything's fine. I feel a little out to sea if he's not there."

The Paperboy, directed by Precious helmer Lee Daniels, also stars Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey.

The film got a standing ovation after its screening, prompting tears from Efron and Daniels.

"Lee was crying, but I wasn't crying. I cry at my kids, I cry with my family, I don't really cry outside of that - that's the stuff that brings me to tears!" Kidman said of the event. "All of this other stuff, the glitter, and those sort of things, I'm more sort of immune to at this stage. It's probably because I've been doing it for so long."

She went on to credit her relationship with Urban, who is currently a judge on Australia's version of The Voice, for grounding her.

"Keith and I ! have bee n at this for a long time. We know where it all stands, so there's kind of a practicality in a sense," she said.

The Paperboy competes today (May 27) for the Palme d'Or prize against movies including David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis.
