It tells the tale of Berwick war veteran Eric Lomax, now 92, who survived the Burma death railway and is now getting to see his story made into a movie.

Firth plays Eric, and Kidman his wife Patti, with filming taking place in Asia, Australia and Scotland, as well as the north Northumberland coast.

The news brought a big-time buzz to the quiet island as camera crews and engineers occupied hotels and inns.

However, heavy rain and icy temperatures didnt help the occasion. Janice Hnat from The Ship Inn said: We had three cameramen staying and they got up at 4.30am for a sunrise picture.

But all they had was clouds and rain and they came back with no sunrise!

At the Lindisfarne Hotel, complete with new bistro, manager Sean Atkinson added: They were all wrapped up like Nanook of the North raincoats, hoods up, umbrellas, the lot.

They couldnt have picked a worse day to come here, but the filming still went ahead.

Firth and Kidman spent an hour on the causeway while a tiny handful of curious onlookers watched in monsoon conditions.

They were filmed facing one another in the elevated hut, a refuge point for motorists who race the tide and more often than not get stranded.

Fir th climbed down and ran off, with Kidman calling Eric! Eric! after him ... and before you could say Cut!, it was all over.

The celebrity scene had been a well-guarded secret on the mainland but not on the island.

Everyone here knew about it, added Sean. And I even put it on Facebook.

But Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman didnt stay on the island.

Rumour had it that the illustrious duo were staying at Marshall Meadows country house hotel near Berwick, where further filming is to take place.

But manager Robert Hester said: Not so though I do wish they had been here.

Ive got a dozen film crew, but theres no Firth or Kidman on the register.

Mr Lomax, captured at the fall of Singapore in 1941, gained fame by later confronting his Japanese captors and in 2007 receiving a personal apology for his barbaric prisoner-of-war treatment from Osamu Komai, son of Captain Matsuo Komai, who was hanged as a war criminal.

l The film, based on the book of the same name, is due for release next year.
