Nicole Kidman has spoken out about her adopted children with Tom Cruise, Connor and Isabella, and their choice to practice Scientology, saying she respects their beliefs.

The actress was plagued with reports when she first split from the 'Top Gun' star that the controversial organisation was to blame for their 2001 divorce and that it distanced her from the two teenagers who stayed with their father following the break up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman addressed the Scientology issue. She said: Ive chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology.

I have two children who are Scientologists Connor and Isabella and I utterly respect their beliefs.

After claims of an estrangement with her mother, Isabella opened up in an interview last May about their relationship.

She told New Idea magazine: I love my mom. Shes my mom.

Shes great. I see her sometimes and I speak to her.

The usually private star has been her vocal about her first marriage of late. Last year the 'Paperboy' star told Australian WHO magazine that she enjoyed a fantastic marriage with Cruise.

"I married [Tom] really fast and really young, but I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor, and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period," she claimed.

Admitting the split had been tough, she went on: "Then when it didn't work out, I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression, but I have no regrets about all of it.

The couple were married in 1990 and adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. They starred in 'Days of Thunder' and 'Eyes Wide Shut' before separating in 2001. Speaking of how difficult the split was on her the star confessed: "There were times following [the divorce] when I thought, 'Wow, this is the loneliest, loneliest existence.'

"But with Tom, it was a fantastic decade. I wish all of the people that have been involved in my life well, because it's very important to me to be in a place of forgiveness and love." She added that the relationship was all a part of growing up."
