The Look Everyones Loving This Week: Nicole Kidmans Embroidered Gown

Image
Stylewatch Style News Now 03 / 30 / 2013 at 09:00 AM ET Dominik Bindl/Getty Until late Friday afternoon, it looked like Jennifer Hudson (in her skintight white dress ) was going to earn the top style spot, but then Nicole Kidman just barely edged her out. Hudson shouldnt feel too bad, though. After all, its tough to beat out an Oscar de la Renta gown like the one Kidman wore to an Omega gala in Vienna, Austria. The dress, which nabbed over 20,000 votes and counting, is a black-and-nude creation with floral embroidery. PHOTOS: See the other outfits that made the 10 Most Loved Looks of the Week. The sophisticated design is certainly the right choice for such a sophisticated star, but we have to wonder if Kidman still would have earned all those endorsements if voters had seen the back of the gown . While we love the deep-V cut, were still confused by the scarf-like swath of sheer fabric that ties at the neck and falls down the back of the dress. RELATED: Vote on more daring fashion c...

Nicole Kidman: I just went for it when I had to pee on Zac Efron

Nicole Kidman didn't hold back when she had to pee on Zac Efron for her latest film. The actress had to overcome her inhibitions to play disturbed Charlotte Bless in The Paperbo y , who urinates on Zac's character after he gets covered in jellyfish stings. I just went for it and didn't over-think it,' says Nicole , 45. I never get asked to do roles likes that. It's a lot rawer than I've been before and obviously the sexuality of it was frightening. But at the same time it's my job as an actor to commit to the role and not - through my own inhibitions - run away.' Nicole , who was once married to Tom Cruise , admits she likes to surprise people with her role choices these days. I'm just interested in things that are not so mainstream,' the Oscar -winner tells The New Review. I like things that don't conform. Kidman moves outside her comfort zone in 'Stoker'

Nicole Kidman's 44-film career defies easy categorization. She is sought by international cinema's top directors for her aristocratic beauty and laserlike intensity. Yet she pushes her artistic boundaries in dark comedies (Gus Van Sant's "To Die For"), extravagant romances (Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge") and character roles (winning an Oscar under impressive makeup as homely, unstable novelist Virginia Woolf in Stephen Daldry's "The Hours"). There are aspects of all those films in her newest, "Stoker," which she calls "a fairy-tale horror thriller." It's a Hitchcockian coming-of-age nightmare that marks the stateside debut for South Korean iconoclast Park Chan-wook, known for stories of eccentric intrigue, sumptuous visuals and brutal violence. Kidman plays Evelyn, a recent widow sharing a drafty mansion with her emotionally distant daughter, India (Mia Wasikowska). When her late husband's mysterious brother,...

Nicole Kidman sashays through the thing in a state of near-orgasm. Cusack has never been sleazier

The second strand has Jacks elder brother Ward (Matthew McConaughey) investigating whether van Wetter is truly guilty of killing the local sheriff. The third subplot concerns racial tension. The whole story is narrated, often indistinctly, by the Jansens black maid Anita Chester (Macy Gray), and light relief comes in the form of a prissy, black English writer (David Oyelowo) who comes to the South to help Ward and doesnt like what he finds. The tale is set in 1969 Florida, and its presented in salacious, tawdry detail. What are its attractions? Well, Mr Efron spends much of his time panting in his underpants. Ms Kidman sashays through the thing in a state of near-orgasm. Cusack has never been sleazier. If youve ever wanted to see the intestines spill out of an alligator, this is the movie for you. The film has arresting moments, but theyre wasted thanks to poor story-telling and terrible pacing. Its impossible to empathise with any of these characters, and nothing about the procedure o...

'Stoker' Review: Nicole Kidman thriller from Korean director Park Chan-wook

Image
This film image released by Fox Searchlight Pictures shows Matthew Goode, left, Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, right, in a scene from "Stoker." (AP Photo/Fox Searchlight Pictures) Over the last decade, Korean director Park Chan-wook has established a reputation for stylish, mood-laden thrillers that come equipped with disturbing plot twists as a standard feature. The most notorious of these, 2003's "Oldboy," features shudder-inducing seafood consumption and a jaw-dropping final-act revelation; its Hollywood remake, directed by Spike Lee, is due out this fall. Meanwhile, we have Park's first English-language effort, "Stoker." It's clear that Park's cool, almost languorous sense of menace had no problems clearing customs, but his serpentine sense of story must have been stuck in quarantine. This is the first of his films Park didn't write himself, and while the setup is compelling, a prosaic follow-through serves to straighten out ...
