NICOLE Kidman, Keith Urban and family flew home to the US having spent the past fortnight laying down roots in Sydney and planning to relocate here for the rest of the year.

The couple and daughters Sunday Rose, 3, and Faith, 1, flew out on a commercial flight yesterday afternoon after Urban wrapped his first shooting session on the Channel 9 talent show The Voice, on which he has a role as a voice coach.

A source for the family said the pair spent much of their trip taking "business meetings" which would enable them to settle in Sydney for the rest of the year.

In much the same way that Kidman and her first husband Tom Cruise relocated to Kidman's home town for 16 months during the making of films Moulin Rouge and Mission Impossible 2 in 1999, Kidman was busy laying the groundwork for her family to once again call Sydney home.

If nothing else, the news is a vote of confidence in Nine's commitment to the yet-unseen The Voice.

Along with business meetings which would suggest Kidman may have plans to shoot a film here, the couple have enrolled their eldest daughter Sunday in an exclusive preschool, the little girl enjoying her first school days in Sydney last week.

The youngster, who turns four in July, started in preschool in Los Angeles at the start of the year and is now in an equivalent school four days a week in Sydney.

While the family have moved undetected between their Lavender Bay home and Sutton Forest estate in the Southern Highlands of late, their children have enjoyed their first real getting-to-know-you sessions with two sets of grandparents in Australia.

Kidman's rep yesterday refused to discuss the couple's medium-term plans but confirmed some "very important meetings" had been held locally by both Kidman and Urban from which they hope to organise work to stay in Sydney until Christmas.
