Nicole Kidman willing to risk looking like a fool for 'The Paperboy'

Talk about a good week. On back-to-back days recently, Nicole Kidman received two nominations each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes. Both organizations cited her performance in the television movie "Hemingway & Gellhorn" opposite Clive Owen, but what caught many by surprise was the pair of supporting actress nominations she received for her role in Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy." The simmering noir film has been a point of controversy and conversation since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, with audiences buzzing over Kidman's fearless, bold performance as Charlotte Bless, a Florida woman who falls for a convicted murderer (John Cusack) after writing him in prison. Zac Efron also stars, and there's a scene in the film, in which Kidman uses a home remedy of sorts to heal his character after a jellyfish sting, that gets people talking. But it's her intense no-touching prison sex scene with Cusack that leaves audiences speechl...

Globes shine bright for Aussies

Maybe Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Naomi Watts will split a cab to the Academy Awards ceremony. The Australian quartet is on track to score Oscar nominations, and maybe even win a few of the coveted statuettes, after a bumper performance at the Golden Globes nomination ceremony on Thursday. Just 24 hours after Jackman, Kidman and Watts picked up nominations to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards and 48 hours after Urban was short-listed for an Oscar, they struck gold at the Globes - one of the crucial Academy Award lead-up events. Usually Urban is Kidman's date to movie award ceremonies, but after securing a Globe best original song nomination for For You, which featured in Act of Valor, an action film about a team of Navy SEALs, the New Zealand-born, Queensland-raised country music star could share the winner's podium with his wife at both the Globes and the Oscars. Kidman secured two Globe nominations - repeating her SAG nomination haul. She will be competing...

Park Chan-wook on Hollywood Debut 'Stoker': I Wish I Had More Time With The Actors

Image
Abdelhak Senna/Getty Images SEOUL -- Park Chan-wook says he had to break out of his comfort zone for his English-language debut Stoker . The South Korean director, best known for his Vengeance Trilogy, spoke to local reporters Thursday about working on the U.S. psychological thriller . Shooting a movie in the United States was a novel and stimulating experience. But it was also a very awkward one, having to work with a new system and language, Park said. I guess Ive been accustomed to working with almost always the same cast and crew in Korea for such a long time. VIDEO: Nicole Kidman Gets Creepy in 'Stoker' Trailer I was struck by how fast the production moved; there were a lot of shooting to be done everyday and I was a little sad that I didnt have time to discuss things more with the actors, he said about collaborating with Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman , Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode on the set in Tennessee . Stoker , about a mo! ther and daughters encounter with a...

Nicole Kidman in 'Stoker': Poster

Family? Its complicated but also bloody, at least when it comes to Oldboy director Park Chan-wooks thriller Stoker, whichstars Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. Case in point, check out this exclusive one-sheet poster for the film that features an unusual holiday-esque portrait warning DO NOT DISTURB THE FAMILY with a blood splattered twist. Kidman (as mother Evelyn) shoots eye daggers big enough to kill, Wasikowska (as daughter India) holds a sharply pointed pencil in her bloody hands, and Matthew Goode (as handsome uncle Charlie, who appears out of the blue after Indias father dies, and becomes the object of both Evelyn and Indias obsessive affections) stands to the side with an intense stare. Written by Wentworth Miller and co-produced by Ridley Scott, the late Tony Scott, and Michael Costigan, Stoker is the first English language film helmed by South Korean director Park, a master at emotional murder mystery with a stylized edge. As Russell Crowe touched down from New York yesterday, driving straight from the airport to the Rose Bay home of estranged wife Danielle Spencer to reunite with his sons, Kidman was preparing her family to leave Belgium, where she has been filming Grace of Monaco. Little Miss Sunshine actress Toni Collette is holidaying in Port Macquarie , Brothers and Sisters favourite Rachel Griffiths has been seen at Palm Beach and Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan has flown in from his Los Angeles base. The Mentalist star Simon Baker has been seen at his house in Lennox Head, near Byron Bay, and Twilight hunk Kellan Lutz is staying with his girlfriend, former Home and Away babe Sharni Vinson, in Cronulla. Kidman gets Oscar boost

Nicole Kidman's Oscar campaign has received a major boost with the actress scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her sexed up performance in The Paperboy. Kidman, who also received a nomination for her TV movie Hemingway Gellhorn, will have plenty of mates at the January 27 SAG ceremony, with Naomi Watts and Hugh Jackman also receiving SAG nominations on Wednesday in Los Angeles. The SAG Awards are one of the major pre-Oscar award ceremonies, with a nomination keeping Oscar campaigns alive, while SAG snubs can torpedo hopes. Russell Crowe (Les Miserables), Toni Collette (Hitchcock) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) were snubbed by SAG voters. Jackman, for his leading performance in Les Miserables, is one of the frontrunners for the best acting Oscar and his SAG best actor nomination continues his journey to a possible Academy Award statuette. Watts, for the tsunami survivor film The Impossible, is also a great shot at an Oscar nomination after winning over SAG...

Golden Globe nominations 2013: Nicole Kidman scores dual nods

Image
Nicole Kidman scored a pair of Golden Globe nominations Thursday for two divergent performances that showcase the Oscar winners versatility and willingness to tackle challenging even potentially degrading roles in the name of drama. Drafting on her dual Screen Actors Guild award nominations Wednesday, Kidman scored a Golden Globe nod for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture for her turn as a hot-to-trot Southern belle in The Paperboy and one for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television portraying a war correspondent in the HBO biopic Hemingway & Gellhorn. In director Lee Daniels The Paperboy, which divided critics when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and has grossed less than $700,000 at the box office, Kidman plays a sexed-up Southern Barbie with a beehive bouffant and a penchant for steamy correspondence with prison inmates. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are thrilled they have both been nominated for Golden Globes.

Keith said: "We've both always felt that if we achieve anything, it's always for us. She's been nominated in the past and won, and I've shared that with her, and I share all my moments with her, too. The difference today is it's an actually literal 'us.'" Nicole added: "As an actor you look for roles that are rich, complicated, and that stretch you and this year I was blessed to find two. To have the chance to play them was a gift in itself and to then be acknowledged this way is icing on the cake. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!" Meanwhile, nominee Bradley Cooper can't believe he is up for an award for his leading role in 'The Silver Linings Playbook'. He said: "To actually go there, it's still something, for me, that kind of blows me away... I like to go and watch all the movie stars. I get star struck and they're all in the room and I see Clint Eastwood or something and I still get a complete thrill o...

Golden Globes nominations analysis: Good day for Nicole Kidman, 'Django,' cable TV

"Django Unchained," the Quentin Tarantino movie starring Jamie Foxx, got a big boost today from the Golden Globes nominations . The Globes matter not just because they're one of the most entertaining awards shows Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting this year's event at 8 p.m. Jan. 13 on NBC but because they can be a predictor of who has the best chance of making the Oscar cut. "Django," a very Tarantino-ized look at a slave-turned-bounty hunter in the pre-Civil War South, nabbed nods for best drama, best director and best screenplay and for Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz as best supporting actors. The Globes spotlight could help the movie stand out in an awards-season crowd that's so far given more attention to fellow Globes drama nominees "Argo," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty" and comedy/musical nominees "Les Miserables" and "Silver Linings Playbook." Who else scored a...

Kidman, Jackman, Watts get awards nods

Just like a boxer getting off the canvas after a knockdown, Nicole Kidman has resurrected her chances of an Oscar for her sexually-charged performance in The Paperboy with two Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations. Kidman was given little chance of an Oscar nomination by film critics and award pundits, but that changed on Wednesday in Los Angeles when the SAG nominations were announced and Kidman, along with fellow Australians Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts, received nods. The SAG Awards are a bellwether for the Academy Awards. The news was not so good for Jacki Weaver, Russell Crowe and Toni Collette who were all snubbed for SAGs and face the prospect of being forgotten in the hype leading up to the announcement of the Academy Award nominations on January 10. Weaver, for her performance in the Silver Linings Playbook, and Collette, for Hitchcock, were considered better chances than Kidman of snaring SAG nominations in the supporting actress category. Kidman will now mount a serious chal...
